Bishop, Henry (Rowley) 11/18/1786 - 04/30/1855

Henry (Rowley) Bishop was an English composer. He is known today for songs like "Home, Sweet Home" and "Lo, Hear the Gentle Lark". His compositions comprehend in addition 120 dramatic works, including 80 operas, cantatas and ballets. In 1842 he became the first English composer to be raised to the nobility. In 1848 he became professor of music at Oxford University. In spite of his many gifts, however, he died in poverty abandoned by his wife and children.
