Johann Samuel Schröter (1752-1788) was an original composer who awakened the interest of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Schröter came to London at the age of 20, where he enjoyed success in the Bach-Abel concerts and later succeeded Johann Christian Bach as court musician to Queen Charlotte. Unfortunately, his elopement to Scotland with a pupil caused a scandal which abruptly ended his public career.
He spent the last years of his life in retirement in his house in Pimlico, where he continued to teach and enjoyed the protection of the Prince of Wales (later George the Fourth), who, himself an amateur violoncellist, invited him from time to time to participate in musical soirées.
