Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788),known as the "Berlin" or "Hamburg" Bach, was the second surviving son from Johann Sebastian Bach's first marriage. He studied music with his father and law at the Universities of Leipzig and Frankfurt on the Oder. After 1738 he was chamber musician to the crown prince Frederick of Prussia in Ruppin, after the ascent of Frederick the Great in 1740 in Berlin and Potsdam. After 1768 he succeeded his godfather, Georg Philipp Telemann, at the five main churches in Hamburg.
