Deichert, Christian - 1962

foto9249.gif
I was born in 1962 in the good old bad old German Democratic Republic during a fierce storm in Thuringia. My mother had been on a countrywide tour with a choir. During a performance in a church she met the local young minister; from this meeting resulted a deep love and four children. Both parents had a great love of music and singing. My first instrument was the violin, but this career was one day no longer pursued, which occasionally makes me sad. My second instrument was the drum, which still makes me happy even today. From time to time I still take up the violin when no one is around.

After a lot of confusion I landed in Freiburg. In 1982 during my first trip to Ghana I fell in love with the African music culture. In 1985 I undertook my second trip, since then the sky is full of drums.

Many further journeys followed, mainly to Gambia, where I fell in love with and learned to play mandinka and karoninka music. In time I became friends with other instruments as well, mainly African percussion; I also now like to play shepherd's flute and steel drum. Living according to the motto "artists never fall" I have been since 1983 a drummer, drum teacher, drum maker and performer. More recently I have also become a choir director and composer. I am now married for the second time and have two adult children from my first marriage. www.human-rhythms.de
