Johann Sebastian Bach’s chorale “Ich steh an deiner Krippe hier” is composed in such a way that the simple melody is supported by tightly woven four-part harmony, which reinforces the calm, contemplative nature of the text. It is also noteworthy that Bach creates a subtle sonic tension through deliberate use of suspensions and unobtrusive dissonances, without compromising the clear structure of the chorale or its immediate comprehensibility.
