“Im schönsten Wiesengrunde” was originally written as a much longer poem and was condensed into the song version we know today only after a few stanzas were selected. The recurring refrain of the greeting to the quiet valley gives the song a cohesive structure that ties together the descriptions of nature and the sense of attachment to one’s homeland found in each stanza.
