Charles Gounod : Ave Maria (Meditation on Prelude No. 1 by J.S. Bach)
Charles Gounod's Ave Maria is based on a melody added above the Prelude in C major from Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, thus combining two different musical eras in one work. A characteristic feature is that the melody line is predominantly stepwise, deliberately designed to lie calmly and evenly above the constant harmonic foundation.
