Vaccai/Vaccaj, Nicola -

Niccolo Vaccai (1790-1848) was an Italian composer. He was born in Tolentino, near Ancona, and studied opera composition in Naples with Paisiello. He enjoyed great success, especially with his opera Romeo and Juliet, whose third act is so effective that it was substituted in Italy for the third act of Vincenzo Bellini's opera by the same name. From 1829 on he taught voice in Paris and London. In 1838 until his death he taught composition in the Milan Conservatory. His collection of arias for voice students remains popular.
