Merikanto, Oskar -

Frans Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) was a Finnish composer. He was born in Helsinki and studied in Helsinki, Leipzig and Berlin. In 1892 he became an organist in Helsinki and in 1911 opera kapellmeister there. He composed three operas; a concerto for violin, clarinet, horn and string quartet; violin, piano and organ compositions; choral works and songs. His son Aarre Merikanto also became a well-known composer. Frans Oskar Merikanto died in Hausjärvi-Oitti.
