Gerhard Rassner was born in 1938 in Leipzig, Germany. He sang in church choirs as a child and in 1955 began directing a choir. He studied choral conducting from 1966-68. He taught himself bassoon and sang in various choirs.
In 1973 he took over the direction of his church choir. From 1968-2006 he sang in the church choir of St. Martin. He has also sung for ten years in the Extrachor of the Kassel State Theater.
Since 2005 he has been a critic for classical music.
