Ferdinand Norbert Seger (Seegr, Seeger, Segert 1716-1782) was a Bohemian organist and composer and one of the most important representatives of the old Bohemian school.
He was born in Øepín and studied with Bohuslav Matej Èernohorský. He performed as a singer and violinist in various churches in Prague. In 1741 he became organist at the Teyn church and in 1745 also at the Kreuzherren (Lords of the Cross?) church. His most important students were Jan Koželuh and Josef Mysliveèek. In 1782 Emperor Joseph II intended to appoint him to the position of court organist in Vienna, but unfortunately Seger died before receiving the decree.
Seger was a prolific composer. He wrote several hundred organ pieces (preludes, toccatas and fugues), masses, motets, psalms and litanies. His oeuvre remained forgotten for a long period of time and was first rediscovered at the beginning of the twentieth century.
