Friedrich Schneider (1786-1853), whose full name was Johann Christian Friedrich Schneider, was born in Altwaltersdorf near Zittau, Germany. He was a composer, organist and court kapellmeister.
At an early age his father Johann Gottlob Schneider taught him to play the organ. Early attempts at composition followed.
In 1813 he received an appointment as organist at the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig. Later he became music director at the local theater. In 1821 he became court kapellmeister to the ducal court in Dessau. He held this post until his death in 1853. During this time he also founded a music school and various choirs in Dessau. He also participated in various music festivals as conductor, composer and organizer.
Friedrich Schneider enjoyed great respect in Germany during his lifetime. His compositions includ operas, piano concerti, oratorios, overtures, symphonies, songs and circa 400 choral works. His most famous composition is the Oratorio Das Weltgericht (The World Court).
