A German composer and violinist. He was born in Frankfurt am Main as the son of a wealthy Jewish merchant. At age four he came to Offenbach, which at the time was an excellent place for music. His interest in music was awakened at an early age thanks to musical performances in his household. He received violin lessons from the virtuoso Paul Thieriot of Leipzig and learned music theory from Anton André. After attending the University of Heidelberg for two years and long travels he returned to become a merchant. His many songs, with their simply, melodious and somewhat sentimental style, where popular at the time. He was known as the “Song-Seyer”, but he also wrote instrumental chamber music as well. He died nearly 88 years old in Frankfurt am Main.
