Born in Hygum, Germany.

Studied church music at the College of Music in Leipzig.

From 1937 until he retired in 1973 he served as the cantor and organist in the Kreuzkirche church in Hamburg-Ottensen.

In charge of church music in Hamburg-Altona, where he was promoted to musical director.

Director of the Altonaer Propsteichores (Heinrich-Schütz-Chor), a church choir, as well as a group for young singers, for which he composed many pieces.
