Herman came to St. Joachimsthal in 1518 as a cantor and teacher at the Latin school. He was a follower of the Reformation, and a letter from Martin Luther to him dated November 6, 1524 has survived. In St. Joachimstal, he worked together with several individuals including Johannes Mathesius who served as the school's rector from 1532 and as its pastor from 1540. Herman retired on June 24, 1557. He published his songs in 1560 under the title ''Die Sonntagsevangelia über das Jahr in Gesänge verfasset für die Kinder und christlichen Hausväter''.
