Kreutzer, Konradin 11/22/1780 - 12/14/1849

Konradin Kreutzer (1780-1849), composer and music director, was a student of Joseph Haydn and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. After 1800 he composed altogether about 50 Singspiele and operas. After 1822 he was Kapellmeister in Vienna and elsewhere in Austria and Germany (including Stuttgart and Cologne).



His fame rests today almost exclusively on his opera "Das Nachtlager von Granada" ("The Nightcamp of Granada"), which was premiered in Vienna in 1834 and is reminiscent of the work of Carl Maria von Weber. Both composers used the same librettist: Johann Friedrich Kind, who wrote the text for Weber's "Der Freischütz." His compositions for male chorus, including settings of Ludwig Uland's poems, are also still performed.
