Stockton, John Hart. (New Hope, Pennsylvania, April 19, 1813 - March 25, 1877). The son of Presbyterian parents, he was converted at a Methodist camp meeting in 1838 and received into full membership of the New Jersey Conference in 1857. He was a member of the New Jersey Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was not only a preacher, but also a musician, melody composer and hymn writer.
In 1874, he retired from actual pastoral work and devoted himself to compiling and publishing gospel songbooks. In that year he published ''Salvation Melodies'' and in 1875 ''Precious Songs,'' for some of which he wrote both words and music. He died suddenly after attending a Sunday morning service at Arch Street Church in Philadelphia.
