MacDowell, Edward (Alexander) 12/18/1861 - 01/23/1908

Edward MacDowell (1861-1908), was a U.S. American composer, pianist, conductor, and composition teacher active in Boston and New York. Although he is considered the main representative of the American Romantic, he studied and composed until age 27 in Germany. After returning to his homeland he concertized for eight years in Boston, where the then already famous Boston Symphony Orchestra premiered many of his works. Then he moved to his hometown of New York, where he was offered a professorship at Columbia University. Unfortunately, quarrels with his new employers led to insomnia and depression.



His compositions, including two piano concertos, orchestral suites, and numerous piano pieces, are reminiscent of Edvard Grieg.
