Bohuslav Matej Cernohorský : Fugue in D-minor (Fuga Chromatica)
Also known as Fuga chromatica, although this title does not originate from the composer.
The usual editions of Czech organ music from the Baroque period place the bass part in the pedal. However, the performance of this voice was not possible on the baroque Czech organs: the pedal range was less than two octaves, and the pipes for F-sharp and G-sharp (major octave) were often assigned to the pedal keys for F-sharp and G-sharp in the minor octave.
This music was predominantly played manually; the pedal was used only for amplification in cadenzas and organ points. The present notation takes this into account.
