Loewe, Carl 11/30/1796 - 04/20/1869

Johann Gottfried Carl Loewe (1796-1869) first came to public notice with a setting of Goethe's "Erlkönig," and became known as the "Schubert of the North." He was professor of music at the Lyceum at Halle and music director at Stettin. His first wife died after the birth of a son; in all Löwe had five children.
