Jörg Widmann's scenic ensemble piece takes up an ancient topos of Babylonian mythology: the encounter of the goddess of love Inanna with Death in female form as Sister Death. The song text by Peter Sloterdijk tells how Inanna descends into the underworld in order to achieve the impossible: To persuade Death through vulnerability to allow her lover Tammu to return to life. An intense dialog is sparked mirrored in music that oscillates between expressive outbursts and meditative contemplation.
