Lorusso, Giulia: Déserts
pour Piano
Deserts is a collection of five pieces for solo piano inspired by the theme of deserts and the images associated with them. These images include the idea of an open space that allows one to listen to oneself and to the world, as well as the vitality enhanced by extreme conditions. Each piece is reminiscent of a specific desert: 1st Wadi Rum, the desert formed by the river. This desert in Jordan was originally the bed of a river that has now dried up and of which only traces remain. The concept of the trace is at the heart of this piece: a phantom harmony, maintained by the sound pedal, underlies the entire work and resonates in response to specific and rapid gestures. By analogy, this resonance evokes the vastness of Wadi Rum and the idea of a space that is only seemingly empty but is actually full of life. 2. uyuni, the salt flats. The largest salt pan in the world is located in Bolivia. When it rains, the thin layer of water transforms this desert into a natural mirror that reflects the sky. 3. atacama, the flower desert. Although this place is one of the driest in the world, it stretches between the south of Peru and the north of Chile. Thanks to the currents of El Niño, it transforms into a huge, flower-filled valley every five years or so. 4. murzuq, the sea of sand. This is a huge desert region (erg) in Libya that consists of almost identical dunes. 5. hammada, the stone desert. A widespread desert system in the Western Sahara, consisting of dry terrain and rocky plateaus, makes life particularly difficult.
