Cast in two sharply contrasting movements for the novel combination of three flutes, clarinets, and bassoons, Samuel Adler’s MUSIC FOR NINE explores timbers from earthy and reedy to fleet and ethereal. The first movement, “Chords,” is a slow, pensive study in parallel harmony, playing the three trios off of one another, and in combination. The second, “Scales,” is nimble and exhilarating, alternating frequently between solo and ensemble focused passages.
