Mirecki, F.: Impromptu or Variations
on the Air Que ne suis-je la fougère
Impromptu, or Variations on the Aria "Que ne suis-je la fougère," is one of the most representative examples of the piano work of the Kraków composer Franciszek Mirecki (17911862). The work is characterised by Mirecki's characteristic transparent, predominantly homophonic texture and the primary role of melody. The introduction plays a significant role in shaping the work's dramatic structure. Unlike the theme, it is extremely turbulent and solemn, yet firmly rooted in the tradition of Classicism. The texture and phrasing are reminiscent of an orchestral overture and should be reproduced as such in terms of volume and timbre. Raised in a spirit of respect for Classical values, Mirecki placed great importance on the construction of a piece, as evidenced, for example, by his selection of diverse variation techniques in the successive variations. Variations eight and nine are particularly noteworthy. The combination of a major theme, described primarily in 32nd and 64th notes, with its simple minor version gives the piece a breath of fresh air, leading the listener to a virtuosic finale. This is an uncomplicated piece, intended for intermediate pianists.
