for SSSAAATTTBBB Saxophone Ensemble

Chen Yi’s WEEPING MEMORY AND FLYING DANCERS is a fascinating two-movement work for SSSAAATTTBBB saxophone ensemble. Weeping Memory evokes the sound of human weeping via mournful chromatic phrases, expressing the composer’s grief over the loss of a deeply respected friend. Flying Dancers draws inspiration from the graceful figures depicted in the Dunhuang caves along the historic Silk Road, bringing their ancient imagery to life in vibrant musical gestures. Approximately 12 minutes in duration, the work offers a striking range of emotional and expressive colors.
