“And Mending” from saxophonist and composer Alex LoRe's sophomore album More Figs and Blue Things is a meditation on repair—of memory, relationships, and self. Written during a reflective season, the piece unfolds with patience and quiet generosity, allowing its lyrical melody to emerge naturally. A simple motif returns in slight variations, mirroring the way healing happens: gradually, in subtle shifts rather than dramatic turns. The harmony carries warmth and translucence, leaving space for breath, listening, and the infectious groove that develops throughout. While in its original small-ensemble form, the music was intimate and conversational, the adaptation for big band opens into a wider emotional landscape, with lush brass, layered saxophone textures, and sweeping dynamic arcs that deepen its sense of release. The music lingers in that fragile space between fracture and renewal—where sound becomes a quiet act of restoration.
