Biographical information
Hans-Peter Dott was born 1952 in Koblenz. He initially studied sacred music in Mainz and subsequently musicology at the University of Heidelberg as well as composition under Isang Yun.
From November 1987 to April 2014, he was artistically responsible for the concerts at BASF in Ludwigshafen. In 2000, he was appointed Chairman of the University Council at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim and served in this capacity until August 2014. In April 2003, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Composition and Music Management. In October 2015, he was appointed Honorary Senator of the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim. He is also regularly selected as a juror for international music competitions.
As a composer, Dott has received composition awards (including in 1985 for his "FANTASIA PER ORGANO" the composition award of the city of Erding and the Free State of Bavaria, in 1987 for the "SONATA DA FANTASIA" the composition award of the Mozartgemeinde Mannheim on the occasion of the Tonkünstlerfest Baden - Württemberg) and scholarships (among others, from the Brahmsgesellschaft in Baden-Baden with a stay in the Brahmshaus Baden-Baden in 2003).
His musicological works include his analysis of Isang Yun's 4th Symphony "Im Dunkeln singen" [in: Der Komponist Isang Yun - Munich 1987, 2nd edition Munich 1997] as well as numerous introductory lectures.
In 2007 he initiated the first performance of Antonin Dvořák's cycle "CYPŘIŠE" ("Cypresses") in the two original versions as songs and as string quartets in Ludwigshafen. A recording of the songs with the quartets, supplemented by the missing six songs in the quartet version through Hans-Peter Dott was released in September 2012 by Hänssler Classic in cooperation with SWR Baden-Baden.
