The musically gifted child already played by ear at the age of 9 on an 18-string zither and on a piano all well-known melodies. After completing his musical education (harmony teacher, zither, piano) he was appointed in 1876 as virtuoso at the ''Komische Oper'' (opera) in Vienna.
