Johann Schneider (*July 16, 1702 in Oberlauter (community of Lautertal (Upper Franconia)); † 5 January, 1788 in Leipzig) was a German organist, violinist and composer. His father was a miller. Schneider received his first musical training in singing, violin and organ from 1708 to 1716 by the Unterlauterer choirmaster Nicolaus Müller. [1] From 1717 to 1720 the Saalfelder conductor Reinmann taught him piano and composition. [1] Circa 1720 he was a piano and organ pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach in Cöthen, violin student of Johann Gottlieb Graun in Merseburg and Johann Graf in Rudolstadt. In 1721 he became court organist and first violinist in Saalfeld. In 1726 he was taken on as a violinist in the court orchestra of Weimar. He took the long-standing position as organist at the Nikolai Church in Leipzig as successor to Johann Gottlieb of Görners 1729. He succeeded Johann Friedrich Doles, the predecessor to the Gewandhaus concerts, in the 1740s and as technical organizer and contributor of the so-called "Großen Concerts” (great concerts).
