Ahle, Johann Georg 06/12/1651 - 12/02/1706

Johann Georg Ahle (baptised 12 June 1651 in Mühlhausen/Thüringen, Germany; died 2 December 1706, ibid.) was a German composer, organist, poet and Protestant church musician. He received early musical training by his father Johann Rudolph Ahle, who himself was also a composer and an organist. After the death of his father in 1673 Georg Ahle succeeded him as cantor and organist in the Divi-Blasii Church in Mühlhausen, Germany. His successor was later Johann Sebastian Bach.

His compositional work consist mainly of arias (among other things he wrote some of his own poems) as well as characterized musical adaptations of poems and songs, for example by Johann Rist and Johann Rist und Philipp von Zesen. A large portion of his works however is considered lost.

Still in the year 1744 the geographer and universal scholar Johann Gottfried Gregorii considered "The Royal Crowned Prince of Poetry" Ahle as well as Johann Sebastian Bach and a few of Bach students the best German organists.
