Allegri, Gregorio, * Rome 1582, t ibid. February 17, 1652, Italy. Composer. Allegri was a choir boy and tenor at ''San Luigi dei Francesi'' in Rome and also during this time a pupil of G. M. Nanino. He then went to the cathedrals of Fermo and Tivoli and was a singer of the papal cathedral since 1629. He wrote numerous spiritual works including his famous nine-part Miserere (around 1638), which was sung for many years during Holy Week (Easter) in the ''Sistine Chapel''.
