Sacchini, Antonio [Italy. Zak ' ki. ni], * Florence 14 June 1730, + Paris 6 Oct. 1786, Italy. Composer. «- Student of F. durante in Naples, he became conductor there in 1761, lived as a successful opera composer in Venice, Rome, Stuttgart, Munich, 1772-82 in London, afterwards in Paris where he was caught in the crossfires of the"Gluckists" and the "Piccinnists" dispute. About 60 operas took took form from his hands, mostly inspired by the Neapolitan school. He however progressed in his last works (including (Edipe d Colone, 1786) influenced by Ch. W. Gluck's Tragédie lyrique. In addition, church (oratorio, masses, psalms) and chamber music.
