Born 1970 in Caracas, Venezuela, he was a member of the Venezuelan ''Youth Orchestra'' system.
In 1989 he moved to Brussels, Belgium. There he studied violin under Igor Oistrack at the ''Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel'' and later on with a higher certificate in composition at the ''Conservatoire Royal de Musique''. A son of one of the most famous composers in Venezuela, Juan Carlos Núñez, he grew up in constant contact with contemporary music.
After coming to Belgium, he played in various contemporary music ensembles such as Ictus ("Wagner-Dream", awarded with the "Grand Prix de Carriére du Disque Lyrique") and Musiques Nouvelles (concert master and editor for "The Nameles City", which was awarded the "Diapason d' or 2011 in France).
He has also performed in festivals such as Musica Viva (France), Festival D' automme (France), Clef De Soleil (France), Ars Musica (Belgium), Festival Van Vlanderen (Belgium), Festival d' Avignon (France), Transit (Belgium), Festival Atempo (Venezuela)
Festival Cervantino (Mexico), Encuentro de Compositores (Chile), Forum Nueva Música (Argentina), Zagreb Biennial (Croatia), Martha Argerich and Friends (Japan), lkhom-XX (Uzbekistan).
He has also taught contemporary music master classes at the ''Conservatorio del Sistema de Orquestas'' (Venezuela), ''Forum Nueva Música'' (Argentina), ''Hochschule für Musik Weimar'' (Germany), ''Conservatoire Royal e Bruxelles'' (Belgium), ''Academia Cervantina'' (Mexico).
He currently works full-time as a professor at the ''Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile'' as well as artistic director and first violinist of the ''Untref Quartet'', resident quartet of the ''Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero de Argentina'' (he commutes once a month from Santiago to Buenos Aires). The quartet is dedicated exclusively to the contemporary repertoire and has performed works by Irvine Arditti, Garth Knox, Ian Pace and Steve Reich as well as premiere works by Jonathan Harvey, Pauline Oliveros, Henry Pousseur, Fausto Romitelli, Julio Estrada.
