Johann Sebastian Bach : Ave Maria (arr. C. Gounod)
Charles Gounod’s “Ave Maria” is based on a melody superimposed over the Prelude in C major from Johann Sebastian Bach’s *Well-Tempered Clavier*, thereby uniting two distinct musical eras in a single work. A characteristic feature is that the melodic line proceeds predominantly in steps, deliberately designed to flow calmly and evenly over the constant harmonic foundation.
