Teacher training college in Barby, where he became a pupil of Rudolf Palme. In October 1894 he took over the office of assistant organist and soon afterwards that of the first organist at the St. Stephani church in Calbe. Concurrently, he worked as a teacher at the boys' elementary school. From 1897 he attended the Royal Academy Institute for Church Music in Berlin (qualifying as an organist, choral conductor and music teacher at higher educational institutions) and studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music. During this time he wrote his first compositions.
In Calbe he performed oratorios by Joseph Haydn and Carl Loewe, among others. He was appointed seminary music teacher in Barby in 1903, was commissioned in 1907 to establish a teachers' seminary in Neuhaldensleben and to take over the direction of the local oratorio society. In 1912, he was appointed seminary music teacher in Merseburg, where he assumed the post of cathedral organist in 1921. He was also conductor of the Merseburg Cathedral Choir, the ''Merseburg Singakademie'' and the ''Bürgergesangverein'' as well as conductor of 'the ''Hallischer Lehrergesangverein''.
