Richard Franz Joseph Heuberger the Elder (* June 18, 1850 in Graz; † October 28, 1914 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer, conductor, music educator, and music journalist.
After leaving school, he began his professional career in the field of engineering, but at the age of 27 decided to switch to music. He studied at the conservatory in Graz and after successfully graduating in 1902, was entrusted with the direction of the ''Akademischer Gesangverein'' in Vienna. Later, Heuberger also took over the direction of the ''Vienna Singakademie''. From 1902 he also taught at the ''Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde'' in Vienna.
Richard Heuberger also made a name for himself as a music critic for various newspapers, first for the ''Neues Wiener Tagblatt'' and later from 1899 for the "Allgemeine Zeitung" (Munich). In 1896 he succeeded Eduard Hanslick as music critic at the ''Vienna Neue Freie Presse''. In addition, he worked as a freelance journalist and editor, among others of the "Neue Musikalische Presse". He died in Vienna in 1914 and is buried in Hinterbrühl.
His compositional works includes operas, ballets, operettas, songs, choruses and other instrumental compositions. His most famous work is the operetta ''Der Opernbal''l (libretto by Victor Léon).
Heuberger was a freemason. He was admitted to the lodge "Zukunft" in Pressburg (today Bratislava) in 1904. His sponsor was the pianist Alfred Grünfeld.
In 1955, Heubergergasse in Vienna-Hietzing was named in his honor. In 1956 his grave at the Hinterbrühl cemetery was changed into a grave of honor.
