Edmond Audran (* April 12, 1840 in Lyon, Rhône department; † August 17, 1901 in Tierceville, Calvados department) was a French organist and successful operetta composer.
Audran came from a musical family and was a son of the singer Marius Pierre Audran (1816-1887). He received a solid education in Paris ..His teachers included among others Camille Saint-Saëns. He was a student at the École Niedermeyer.
In 1861 he went to Marseille, where in the meantime his family had relocated and worked there as organist of St. Joseph. As a composer, too, he was still concerned almost exclusively with sacred music at this time; only gradually did he turn to secular works as well. Through a family friend, the writer Henri Chivot, he received the libretto "The Grand Mogul" for setting to music, and in 1867 this play had its premiere at the ''Théâtre du Gymnase''.
It was not until the 1860s that the first stage works were performed, first in Marseille and later in Paris. At the end of the 1870s, his works finally established themselves in the French capital as well. He now took up residence here and devoted himself entirely to operetta. Many of his works enjoyed great success in Paris and elsewhere.
