Martin Torp was born in Flensburg in 1957. While at school, he had piano, organ and cello lessons. After graduating from school and completing his civil service, he studied church music in Heidelberg. Basically self-taught in musical composition, he complemented his studies by taking private lessons with Gerhard Rosenfeld, an opera composer and student of Hanns Eisler.
Martin Torp has lived in Berlin as a freelancer since 1985. Alongside his compositional work he has worked as a concert organist and pianist, music teacher and publicist. He received a composition scholarship from the Fritz-Berg-Stiftung as well as numerous commissions; his symphonic cantata "Psalm 103" earned him an award at the "Göttinger Psalter 2012" competition. Torps' extensive body of work includes vocal works (a full-length oratorio, several cantatas, motets and lieder), orchestral and chamber music works as well as organ music and numerous piano works (a selection of which he recorded for the Hastedt CD label for release in 2009).
