John Wainwright, born in Stockport in 1723, was an English church organist and composer. In 1766, he published his only musical work entitled "A Collection of Psalm Tunes, Anthems, Hymns and Chants", of which "Christians Awake, Salute the Happy Morn", after a poem by John Byrom (1692 - 1763), is the best known piece.
