Johann Georg Zechner was born on April 9, 1716 in Gleisdorf, Styria (Steiermark) and died on June 7, 1778 in Stein an der Donau, Lower Austria (Niederösterreich).
Zechner worked as an organist in Göttweig from 1736 to 1743 and then in Krems an der Donau, where he also served as Regens chori until 1753. He also studied theology and was ordained a priest. Financially secure, he was then able to devote himself entirely to copying. He wrote sacred dramas for the Jesuit grammar school in Krems, festive and jubilee music for Göttweig and table music for Melk. His complete works include at least 70 masses, five requiems, numerous church compositions, plays and homage cantatas, ten symphonies, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, two trio partitas and numerous organ pieces.
