Scheel, Josef Gallus

1879 Born on October 16 in Treherz near Leutkirch. Grew up in Zwiefalten, where his father was organist and choirmaster at the cathedral.
1886 Elementary school in Zwiefalten.
1893 Preparatory school in Saulgau.
1896 Saulgau seminary. Worked as a teacher in Waiblingen.
1903 Studied music at the Stuttgart Conservatory with Heinrich Lang and Anton Enz, among others.
1905 Studies at the Regensburg church music school under Haberl, Haller and Renner jun.
1906 Church music studies in Rome under Perosi, Capocci and Dr. Müller, among others.
1907 Director of the cathedral choir in Constance. Choir director of the Liederkranz Konstanz as successor to Ernst von Werra.
1913 Cathedral conductor and cathedral organist in St. Gallen as successor to Gustav Eduard Stehle. Member of the Royal Philharmonic Academy in Rome. Singing teacher.
1925 First prize winner with the “Missa Lauda Sion” at the all-Swiss composition competition. His Brother Klaus song “Mein Herr und Mein Gott” is still popular in Switzerland today.
1935 Honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau.
1945 Retired.
1946 Died on January 31 in St. Gallen.

(Editor of early classical motets. Voice and vocal researcher. Composer of the ''Bruder-Klaus Lied'', popular in Switzerland. Organ researcher.
