Thomas Fritsch, also Thomasius Fritschius, (* August 25, 1563 in Görlitz; † before 1620 in Breslau) was a German clergyman and composer. Thomas Fritsch was the son of the city physicist of the same name, Thomas Fritsch, a doctor of medicine and philosophy. Fritsch was regarded as “one of the most excellent composers of the 16th century”. However, not much is known about his life and work, but we do know from his main work that he was called “magister, professus”, “Kreuzherr mit dem roten Stern zu St. Matthias in Breslau”, that he was considered a “musicus suavissimus” and also a “vir Politica conversationis optimus”. The 6-part mass “Jubilate Deo”, which is based on a motet by Orlando di Lasso's pupil J. Reiner, is probably one of the works composed before 1600. The centerpiece of Fritsch's oeuvre is undoubtedly deá's “Novum et insigne opus musicum”, first published in 1620, whose 119 numbers - 115 Latin, 4 German texts - are arranged according to the Church year. The predominantly 6- (56 pieces) and 8-part scoring suggests that the model of the Venetian school, represented by Hans Leo Haßler and Jacobus Gallus (Handl - cf. his “opus musicum”, 1586), was decisive in addition to Lasso's succession.
