FERRARI, Giacomo Goffredo (Jacopo Gotifredo), baptized 2.4.1763 Rovereto, †December 1842 London; Italian composer.
He received his first training in Verona, later at the Marienberg monastery near Chur and studied counterpoint under G. Latilla and composition under G. Paisiello in Naples from 1784-89. In 1787, he went to Paris as a singing teacher, was accompanist to Queen Marie-Antoinette, harpsichordist at the Théâtre de Monsieur and successfully produced his first opera, ''Les Événements imprévus'', at the Théâtre Montansier in 1791. From 1792, he lived in London as a singing teacher and harpsichordist at the Haymarket Theatre, was a singing teacher in Edinburgh from 1823-27 and then returned to London. According to his own statement, Ferrari was always careful to express the words sensitively and avoid a bravura style in his rich oeuvre.
