Hölzel: Gustav Hölzel, singer. * Pest, September 2, 1813; † Vienna, December 3, 1883. Son of the singer and actor Nikolaus Alois H. (1785–1848), who served as director of the Linz State Theater from 1819 to 1824. He performed in children’s roles in Linz as early as his childhood. In 1829, he was an actor and singer in Ödenburg; from 1830 to 1832 in Graz; from 1832 to 1833 at the Josefstädter Theater in Vienna; and from 1833 to 1837 at the Court Opera. He made guest appearances in Pressburg, Ljubljana, and Olomouc, and from 1837 to 1838 served as principal baritone at the Königstädter Theater in Berlin. He. toured throughout Germany as an opera and concert singer; he settled in Paris for a short time to study singing and was engaged in Zurich from 1838 to 1840. From 1840 to 1863, he performed at the Kärntnerthor Theater in Vienna, where he was dismissed due to a change in the libretto of the opera “Templer und Jüdin.” From 1863 to 1864, he performed in Darmstadt. In 1840 and 1843, he sang in London (at the request of Queen Victoria, he transposed some of his songs for her). In 1860, he performed in St. Petersburg and Stockholm; in 1865, in Nuremberg; and in 1866, at the Theater an der Wien. On June 21, 1868, he sang the first Beckmesser under Richard Wagner in Munich. In 1870, he undertook a guest performance tour to America; from 1874 to 1877, he was a member of the Vienna Municipal Opera, after which he worked exclusively as a concert singer and voice teacher.
