Leonard Dumitriu is Musical Director of the Rumanian opera house in Iasi, following a position as conductor at the Lyric Theater in Craiova. Since September 2001 he has also been the theatre conductor in Galati, Rumania.
In the course of his career he has conducted standard repertoire in Rumania, Serbia, Moldavia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and the U.S.A. He has also championed lesser known works such as Wolf-Ferrari's "Die vier Grobiane" (broadcast on Rumanian national television) and Boitos "Mefistofele," acclaimed as "Best Rumanian Opera Production of 1999."
He was born in Iasi, Rumania, where he studied at the conservatory there. He has composed chamber music, choral music, and symphonic works. He is a member of the Rumanian Composers' Association. Many of his works have been broadcast on Rumanian national television.
As Professor of Music he lives in Iasi, where he also conducts the academic symphony orchestra.
