Unknown Anonymus : De Bäckergang
De Bäckergang - The ''Gängeviertel'' in Hamburg was the largest slum in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century. Tight construction, overcrowding and terrible sanitary conditions made life there a torment due to epidemics, among other things. Here, in the ''Grosser Bäckergang'' was also the red-light district, the forerunner of Herbertstrasse on St. Pauli. This German halyard shanty is one of the very few shanties that were not re-penned after an English-language shanty.
