Stefan Thomas was born in 1968. He studied piano and comosition at Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1990 he began his studies in composition, piano and music theory at the Musikhochschule Köln, and continued his composition studies with Tristan Keuris in the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
In 1995 he won first prize in the "Young European Composers" competition in Leipzig and in 1997 he won first prize in the "Internationaler Kompositionwettbewerb Joseph Haydn."
His compositions have been broadcast on German, Netherlands, and Finnish radio. He has received commissions from the Ensemble Brass-Partout, from the Ma'alot Quintet and for the Jadal Festival in Basel, Switzerland.
He lives as composer and pianist in Cologne, Germany.
