Gesius, Bartholomäus 01/01/1562 - 01/01/1613

Bartholomäus Gesius (1562-1613) studied between 1578 and 1585 at the "Viadrina" (University) in Frankfurt on the Oder (modern-day Germany). In 1582 he was a cantor in Müncheberg and in 1587 teacher and musician at Castle Muskau in the Oberlausitz region. In spring 1593 he became cantor at the Marienkirche (Church of Mary) and teacher at the Ratsschule (Council School) in Frankfurt on the Oder. He composed the melody to the Easter song of Kaspar Stolshagen "Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn." It may be found in his "Geistliche deutsche Lieder" of 1601. In his "Enchiridion" of 1603 appears the melody of unknown origin to the song "Lobet Gott, unsern Herrn" (Psalm 150), which has become widespread since 1730 with Paul Gerhardts song "Befiehl du deine Wege."
