Witt, Christian 01/01/1660 - 01/01/1717

Christian Witt (1660-1717) was a German composer. He was the son of the court organist in Altenburg Johann Ernst Witt and was taught by his father and by Georg Kasper Wecker. Further studies led him to Nürnberg, Salzburg and Vienna. In the year 1686 he became an organist and in 1713 kapellmeister in Gotha. He wrote several dozen cantatas and published the Psalmodia Sacra in 1715. The melody of the hymn "Schmückt das Fest mit Maien" was written by him.
