Joseph (Leopold) von Eybler (1765-1846) was Austrian composer who was born and died in Vienna. He received his first musical instruction from his father and later from Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Joseph Haydn. He was a friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose widow in 1791 wanted him to complete the fragmented Requiem, which however was finally completed by Franz Xaver Süßmayr. Eybler became choral director for the Carmelites in 1792 and afterwards (1794 to 1824) in the Schottenkloster in Vienna. In 1824 he succeeded Antonio Salieri as court composer.
